May Tree House is a delightful, reconstructed early Victorian house on the Maid's Head Green, right in the centre of Wicken. It sits on the site of a much earlier building that has, over the centuries, been a small farm, a dairy, a pub, a herb doctor's and a miller's (Wicken's windmill, which has recently been restored and is once again operational, is just across the road). The house was extended and completely refurbished in 2009, providing luxury accommodation in a glorious setting at the heart of this Fenland village.
We especially welcome weekenders, holiday makers, business people and professional musicians, including those from overseas (we speak English, French, Italian and a little Spanish and German).
Wicken is ideally located for visitors to Cambridge, Ely, Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds, whether they are travelling on business or pleasure. For lovers of the countryside, Wicken Fen national nature reserve is only 5 minutes' walk away. National Cycle Route 11 and the Ouse Valley and Fen Rivers Ways all pass within a few minutes of the house and there are innumerable walking and cycling possibilities right from the front door.
In addition, despite being relatively secluded, Wicken is less than 10 minutes' drive from the A11 and A14. The Cathedral City of Ely and the home of horse racing, Newmarket, are only ten minutes away and Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds are both within an easy half hour's drive. The historic city of Norwich and the rest of East Anglia, including its stunning coastline, are also within easy reach. Ely is well served by the railway: it takes just over an hour to reach London Kings Cross and there are direct services to Norwich, Ipswich, Birmingham, Sheffield, Leicester, York, Manchester and many other British cities, with connections at Peterborough for Edinburgh and Glasgow.
There are excellent local restaurants within a short drive and you simply walk across the village green to reach the local pub, the Maid's Head.
We have three first floor guest bedrooms, plus a quiet room and a beautiful garden. There is plenty of space for parking both on-site and off-road in the front of the house and secure parking for bicycles. We also have a special facility for cleaning walking boots.
